Support, culture and art
In the middle of the vastness of Namibia, in the Kalahari Desert, lives the indigenous San people. Their ancient traditions and cultural wealth are unique and worth protecting. In this context, Markus Friesacher, the owner of Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur, launched a special project in 2022. It combines social support with the preservation of indigenous culture and art. The collaboration between the San and Gmundner Keramik takes centre stage, bringing indigenous motifs into a new, artistic form.
The core of the project lies in the promotion of the San community, but also in cultural exchange. Local workshops introduced San artists to the world of ceramics. These workshops served to promote craftsmanship and at the same time offered the San an opportunity to realise their own artistic visions. Initial designs were created on paper, which were then further developed in collaboration with Gmundner Keramik.
A new water pump has also recently been invested in. It is particularly important to Markus Friesacher to ensure the local supply and secure the basis of life.
SAN-Edition
This unique collaboration resulted in the SAN collection from Gmundner Keramik. The designs of the San, inspired by their environment and deeply rooted in their cultural identity, merge with the typical colours and techniques of the Austrian manufactory. Earthy, warm colours and organic patterns reflect the landscapes of the Kalahari and tell stories of an ancient connection to nature.
This collection is also an essential artistic project – it represents an important livelihood for the indigenous San people. The sale of the SAN ceramic pieces provides financial support to the community, as well as giving them a platform to promote their culture beyond the borders of Africa and preserve their traditions. It is an honest aid project based on solidarity and mutual respect.
The cooperation means a lot to Markus Friesacher. His close ties to Namibia and his deep involvement with the life of the San give the partnership a particularly profound meaning. This collaboration creates a bridge between two cultures that are linked by a shared passion for art and tradition.
Each handmade ceramic piece from the SAN edition of Gmundner Keramik is an expression of cultural appreciation and shows how art can act as a medium of understanding and support. At the same time, the social dimension remains in the foreground: the San benefit from the proceeds and are given the opportunity to sustainably secure their culture. ‘Ceramics of the San’ is therefore more than just a symbol of artistic exchange – it embodies the power to give hope and keep traditions alive.
