Vivienne Westwood x Gmundner Keramik x MAK

In cooperation with Gmundner Keramik and the Vivienne Westwood Studio, the MAK presents an outstanding, exquisite set of artists’ tableware based on a design by Andreas Kronthaler, Vivienne Westwood’s creative director. Manufactured by Gmundner Keramik, the MAK × Gmundner Keramik × Vivienne Westwood Special Plate Edition fuses Vivienne Westwood’s art with traditional handicraft, appealing alike to collectors and aficionados of ceramic art.

Consisting of six different dinner and dessert plates, the special edition features drawings and graphics by Vivienne Westwood. The plates include the Pirate arm and cutlass from the original London World’s End boutique, a reference to plundering the past for ideas. Another one is inscribed with the words AKTIVE, RESISTA, KULTURE, FUTURE. Or a Greek vase, a symbol of the origins of western culture and a constant source of inspiration, and Vivienne’s hand drawings, each featuring a pledge to Save the Ocean and Save the Rainforest, the blue and green lungs of our earth. The selection is inspired by Dagobert Peche’s influence on the world of design.

about the designer...

Andreas Kronthaler, born in Tyrol, 1966, is the Creative Director and husband of the late Vivienne Westwood. In 1980 Kronthaler spent five years training to be a fine jeweller at art school in Graz, Austria. He first studied industrial design with Carl Auböck, then moved to the fashion course at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where he met Vivienne Westwood. In 1989, she invited him to work in her London studio to further develop a series of dress designs, inspired by the Renaissance for the Spring/Summer 1991 collection: Cut, Slash & Pull. Married in 1993, Vivienne Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler continued to work together for the next 30 years.

MAK General Director Lilli Hollein: “Artists and designers have long contributed to the planning and realization of festivals with their designs and ideas. With the MAK Artists’ Dinner, we are following this tradition of artists’ festivals, and I am delighted that, after the first edition with Jakob Lena Knebl, Andreas Kronthaler could be won for the design of the second edition of artists’ tableware with Gmundner Keramik. Many thanks for this extraordinary cooperation, and I am delighted that a special edition with designs by Vivienne Westwood / Andreas Kronthaler has been made possible.”

Andreas Kronthaler: “I’m very happy to contribute to this important occasion at home in Austria.”

Alexander Köck, Procurator at Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur: “This cooperation unites our centuries-old handicraft and Austrian cultural heritage with the visionary design world of Vivienne Westwood. We are proud to bring together traditional and modern influences in this unique special edition.”
