THE FLAMING OF CERAMICS

Definition of the term

The term 'intangible cultural heritage' has been used by UNESCO since 2003 to document and protect a wide range of living traditions worldwide. Whether performing arts, customs, festivals, knowledge of nature or craft techniques - all forms of intangible cultural heritage are always based on human knowledge and expertise as well as a variety of skills. The visualisation of customs and practices creates a new understanding of regional characteristics and makes a valuable contribution to their preservation.

How did this technique come about?

Austria is characterised by its rich and distinctive ceramic tradition. There were a large number of pottery workshops in the Traunsee region.

The workshops of the potters are mentioned as early as 1492. Even then, the potters were already spraying patterns on clay bowls with green paint in horns.

Around 1600, an indifferent pattern became established as a typical contemporary decoration, which was very popular at that time not only in Gmunden but also in other ceramic regions. This decoration was initially characterised by coloured dots and spots on white lead glaze, which created a kind of marble effect. From the second half of the 18th century, the initially used light green colour, in combinations with cobalt blue, deep green and brown, was replaced by green banding, which, in combination with the white glaze background in the firing, has since been marketed under the collective term "green-flamed ware" and is still used today. It is characterised by its use primarily for utility or household ceramics.

The region was also characterised by the Gmunden crockery makers. They were not only at markets, but also shipped their products across the Traun to Vienna.

The "Grüngeflammte" or "Gmundnerisches Geschirr" (Gmundner crockery) came onto the market as early as the 18th century and can therefore look back on a tradition of over 300 years.

The traditional craft of "flaming" found a new home and workshop with Franz Schleiß I. In 1843, he acquired the Hafnerhaus on the Graben, which had existed since around 1500, and his son Leopold founded the "Gmundner Tonwarenfabrik" in 1903 on the present-day site of Gmundner Keramik, where the flamers still practise their craft today.

From 1923 onwards, the artist Gudrun Wittke-Baudisch developed wonderful shapes and patterns based on the flaming technique.

There are currently only 4 ladies from Upper Austria still practising the traditional craft of "flaming ceramics" at the Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur in Gmunden. Here they introduce themselves and talk about their daily work:

Warum ich Flammerin geworden bin

Ich bin damals durch eine Freundin zur Gmundner Keramik gekommen, da diese immer so von ihrer Arbeit geschwärmt hat. Und das hat mich so beeindruckt, dass ich dann auch unbedingt hier anfangen wollte. Ich hab mich dann einfach auf „Gut Glück“ beworben und es hat geklappt und ich durfte dann auch gleich anfangen. Nach einigen Jahren hab ich dann sogar noch den Lehrberuf „Keramiker“ erlernen dürfen. Hier konnte ich ganz viele Arbeitsbereiche kennenlernen. Jedoch war und ist das Flammen meine liebste Aufgabe.

haben mich schon ganz viele auf meine Arbeit angesprochen. Ich find’s schön und fühle mich geehrt!

Warum ich Flammerin geworden bin

Es war eigentlich Zufall. Ich bin gelernte Frisörin und hab mich damals umorientiert. Meine Nachbarin, die bei Gmundner Keramik gearbeitet hat, hat mir den Tipp gegeben, dass gerade Flammerinnen gesucht werden und gemeint, ich soll’s doch einfach mal probieren. Es hat mir dann auch gleich gefallen und auch geklappt und ich wurde angelernt. Zuerst hab ich beim Glasieren und Ausbessern geholfen und dann bin ich schon in die Flammerei gekommen. Und wie es der Zufall so wollte, war das genau die richtige Entscheidung für mich!

hab ich ein voll gutes Gefühl und freu mich total, dass meine tägliche Arbeit dazuzählt!

Warum ich Flammerin geworden bin

Ich hab schon als kleines Mädchen immer gerne gemalt und überall meinen Zeichenblock mitgenommen und meine Zeichnungen mit Datum versehen. Zufällig hat die Gmundner Keramik damals Kerammalerinnen gesucht und ich hab mich für eine Lehrstelle beworben und beim Aufnahmetest gemalt.

Ich hab dann einige Jahre geflammt und bin erst 2012 in die Malerei gewechselt, weil einfach mehr Kerammalerinnen gebraucht wurden. Heute helfe ich noch oft aus und freu mich über die Abwechslung zwischen Malen & Flammen.

… ich hab’s gleich mal allen meinen Freundinnen erzählt und mich sehr gefreut, dass meine Arbeit so wertgeschätzt wird und man jetzt weiß, was das eigentlich ist und was da dahinter steckt!

Warum ich Flammerin geworden bin

Ich bin eigentlich durch meine Godi (Patentante) zum Keramik malen gekommen. Ich hab schon immer viel und gerne gemalt und meine Godi hat dann gemeint, dass das doch der perfekte Beruf für mich wär. Ich hab mich dann auch beworben und die Aufnahme gemacht. In meiner Lehrzeit durfte ich dann auch das Flammen erlernen.

fühle ich mich sehr stolz, dass meine tägliche Arbeit Teil des immateriellen Kulturerbes ist.
