VIVIENNE WESTWOOD X GMUNDNER CERAMICS X MAK
Design legend meets Austrian cultural heritage: in cooperation with Studio Vivienne Westwood and the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), Gmundner Keramik has created another extraordinary plate set. It was created based on the designs of Andreas Kronthaler, Creative Director at Vivienne Westwood, and is now available as a strictly limited special edition.
The twelve-piece plate set was designed exclusively for the MAK Artists' Dinner, which will be held on 5 December 2024 as part of the exhibition "PECHE POP. Dagobert Peche and his traces in the present". The various dinner and dessert plates feature drawings and graphics created by Vivienne Westwood herself: These include, for example, the "pirate's arm" and the cutlass from the "World's End" boutique in London, which are an allusion to the plundering of historical ideas. They are mixed with that of a Greek runner: it refers to ancient Greece as the birthplace of Western culture, while the words Aktive, Resista, Kulture and Future associatively complement the pictorial motifs. Other plates feature childlike abstract hand drawings and the words Save the Ocean and Save the Rainforest . Also included: the red intertwining slogan Let it rock and an antique vase on which a question mark is surrounded by laurel. The selection was inspired by the Austrian Art Nouveau artist Dagobert Peche, who became famous above all for his ornamental decorations.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER...
Andreas Kronthaler (* 1966, Tyrol) is the creative director and husband of the late Vivienne Westwood. After completing a five-year training as a jeweller at the School of Art in Graz in 1980, he initially studied industrial design under Carl Auböck at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He switched to the fashion class, where he met Vivienne Westwood . In 1989, she invited him to her London studio to further develop a series of Renaissance-inspired clothing designs for the spring/summer 1991 collection: Cut, Slash & Pull. Vivienne Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler married in 1993 and worked together for the next 30 years.
