Winter in Gmunden – Excursion Tips around Lake Traunsee

The day begins in the historic town centre, where Gmunden's Christmas market unfurls its scent of cinnamon, waffles and fir trees between Rathausplatz and Esplanade. Just a short walk away is the romantic Ort Castle, whose white walls are reflected in the wintry lake. Cross the wooden bridge to reach the small island, which is perfect for a quiet morning stroll.

The world of Gmundner ceramics

In the afternoon, the route leads to the Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur, where real craftsmanship has been practised for generations. Visitors experience how each piece is moulded, glazed and painted and can look over the shoulders of the craftsmen as they work. In the festively decorated shop you will find lovely gift ideas, from classic winter motifs to modern designs. The manufactory is open until 6 p.m., making it an ideal programme item before dusk.

Ride on the decorated Traunseetram

Afterwards, you can take a ride on the nostalgic Traunseetram, which has been travelling with its Art Nouveau railcar since 1911. It connects the most beautiful stations around the lake, from the railway station via the Esplanade and Rathausplatz to the Seebahnhof and back. The St Nicholas rides, during which music is played and little stories are told, are particularly popular during Advent.

Magic lights on the Grünberg

When evening falls, the most atmospheric experience of the day awaits: the treetop path on the Grünberg. Hundreds of lights, projections and gentle sounds transform the snow-covered forest into a glowing fairytale landscape. Even the cable car ride up, with a view of the glittering lights of Gmunden and the lake, is an unforgettable moment.
